America’s Best Dance Crew 2 Premieres Tonight on MTV

Meet the 10 new crews (one crew is eliminated in Thursday night’s premiere episode):

A.S.I.I.D. (Detroit, MI) – They grew up in tough neighborhoods and lean on each other for support. Their inspiration comes from crew member Joey who is deaf.

Boogie Bots (Washington, DC) – They think of themselves as robots that have come to life. Each performance is dedicated to crew member Joesar’s father, who has been in a coma for the past six months.

Distorted X (Houston, TX) – All are studio dancers who have dubbed themselves “Houston Socialites — without the money.”

Fanny Pak (Los Angeles, CA) – This zany bunch is looking to bring back the bold and wacky energy of the 80s with a unique dance style and fashion sense.

Presh Select (Philadelphia, PA) – This crew wants other teens out there to know that there is more to streets than hate and that hip hop dance can be a positive force.

Sass x7 (Piscataway, NJ) – The only all-girl crew, these dancers once competed on the Rutgers Dance Team.

SoReal Cru (Houston, TX) – Students at the University of Houston, this crew looks to their family for encouragement and support – especially when they are forced to practice in a restaurant parking lot.

Super Cr3w (Las Vegas, NV) – After failing to make the show last season, three crews mergered together to show the world how b-boys do it.

Supreme Soul (San Francisco, CA) – Full of confidence, this crew has traveled the world competing in hip hop competitions yet they always feel like the underdog.

Xtreme Dance Force (Naperville, IL) – Disciplined studio dancers, this all-guy crew feels that they are pre-judged for their “pretty boy” looks and are looking to show what fierce dancers they really are.

America’s Best Dance Crew 2: Top 10 Performance Recap

America’s Best Dance Crew Season 2 Premieres Tonight

Yay! I’m so excited that Soul Sector made it! I interviewed them at their audition in L.A. almost two months ago! I’ll be covering Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew throughout this next season, so stay tuned for some interviews in the coming weeks. In the meanwhile, here is a clip of Soul Sector during the casting special two weeks ago (click on box below to open clips).

After the live casting special nearly two weeks ago, America’s Best Dance Crew is finally ready to begin! The top 10 crews are set, the judges are excited and the host is People magazine’s hottest bachelor alive. Mario Lopez brings out the crews, and the winner is Super Cr3w, with a huge karate chop from one member that knocks the others down.

Mario says the top five vote getters from the casting special are definitely safe while the bottom five are in danger. Tonight’s performance is Crew’s Choice, meaning they get to pick their own songs and moves.

The Top Five:

SoReal Cru is the first group to perform to Omarion’s “Entourage.” It’s very fluid with some nice movement interspersed with a cool butterfly spin. Shane Sparks predicts a top two finish for them while Lil’ Mama compares them to Kaba Modern, in a good way.

The overly confident Supreme Soul, whose members always wear stupid letterman jackets, view America’s Best Dance Crew as a sports competition. This is why I’ll be against them all season, because this show is supposed to be about the pure joy of dance. They dance to Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See.” Shane Sparks isn’t happy with how messy they are because so much is going on. JC Chasez agrees, saying they didn’t properly use the huge stage.

The seven-man boy band Xtreme Dance Force goes for a day at the spa. They decide to dance to Lil’ Mama’s “Shawty Get Loose.” They come at it hard and I love these rich white kids for bringing it just as hard as anyone. Shane thinks it’s whack because the choreography is too simple for him and JC thinks they were too stiff.

A.S.I.I.D. is all about the awesome, hearing impaired Joey. They flip the script on traditional conventions with Nicole Scherzinger’s “Whatever You Like” by having an entire routine where the three women dominate the men. Shane, Mario and JC all enjoyed a bit where the women treated the men of A.S.I.I.D. like dogs, perhaps telling us a bit more than we’d like to know about what they like in the bedroom.

The final crew in the top five is the Boogie Bots dancing to “More Bounce to the Ounce” by Zapp and Roger. They bring the robotic moves we love and end it with some extremely fast-paced footwork. The judges like it but feel there’s a lot of potential.

The Next Three:

The ultimate B-boys (and the crew Shane Sparks said he’s most excited about in our interview with him) are up next, and Super Cr3w is dancing to “Get Up Offa That Thing” by James Brown. They do their thing in a style I can only call Funky Ninja. Yeah, it’s that awesome. Shane Sparks said Super Cr3w just “sh*t on everybody.”

Phresh Select is all about using dance to solve all of Philadelphia’s problems. They’re representing their city with “Motown Philly” from Boyz II Men. Just like during the casting special, it’s OK, but I am not wowed by this crew. Shane points out some impressive hat tricks.

The final safe crew is Sass x7, the Rutgers dance squad that doesn’t really deserve to be there, but they are the only all-female crew, so dudes who vote with their libidos must have kept them from the bottom two. They perform to “Damage” by Danity Kane. The dancing isn’t great and the cheer moves are obnoxious. Sass x7 wiggled what God gave them, which is probably the smartest things they could do. The judges clearly don’t like the fact that they’re a dance team, not a real tough crew, and the only reason they’re here is because Shhh! was worse.

The Bottom Two:

Let’s go to the mall with Fanny Pak! They’re so much fun and going with “Speakerphone” by Kylie Minogue. They use a huge boom box and end the routine by taking out their sunglasses from their fanny packs.

Distorted X, also in the bottom, is performing to “Oops Oh My” by Tweet. The five women are dressed like pink Catholic school girls and using every last bit of sex appeal they have, but their routine seems kind of short without anything impressive.

The judges then debate and deliberate over who to send home. Shane Sparks brings out the slo-mo cam to take another look at the ladies of Distorted X shaking their booties. JC Chasez rambles on for about 10 minutes about nothing in particular.

Finally, the judges decide the first crew eliminated on the second season of America’s Best Dance Crew is…Distorted X. Whew, Fanny Pak is safe, and I encourage everyone to g to dancecrew.mtv.com and vote for them to keep their totally rad ’80s flair in this competition.

The Best Card Trick In The World

World Class Magician David performs another stunning feat of card magic, and betrays magicians the world over by showing how the best card trick in the world is done.

If you’re as magical as you’ll have a crowd around you. If not, you’ll need to find two people for this card trick. Tell them both to pick a card from the deck. Tell them to look at it and show it to their mate and the camera. They may find this confusing. But persevere.

Tell the lads to dump the cards on the top of the deck, and now perform some flashy shuffles. Now the cards have been shuffled and slammed into the middle of next week, it’s time to perform some M.A.G.I.C. illusions!

With razor-like fingers, cut the deck in half and give one half to a lad. Take half of the other half (that’s a quarter of the whole deck for any maths fans out there) – and fan it out, face up. Now smooch the face up cards into the other quarter deck thus mixing face up and face down cards. Hand this mess of cards to a lad and take the other half of the deck, again, fan out half of this deck and smooch it face up into the other cards.

Take the mess back off the other lad, and bang all the cards together, truly mucking them up. With the cards all mixed together, cut and turn the deck, and ask a lad to tap the deck with his young fingers. This is when the magic happens. Now go through the deck to reveal that not only are all the cards magically returned to order but that the two cards they chose stand alone face-up in the deck.

How it’s done

Other magicians have exiled David from the magic circle and various internet forums for exposing his tricks but that’s not going to stop him from revealing all,Just remember to thank him, if you ever meet him. You’ll know it’s him because he only has one suit.

Once you’ve found some lads, tell them to pick a card each. You do not need to know what these cards are for this cool card trick to work.

Tell the lads to put their chosen cards on top of the deck. We are going to use two blue cards here so you can follow them through the card trick. Now you make what magicians call false cuts. These are used to confuse the lads with movement, making them think the deck is being shuffled without actually changing the order of the cards. Here’s how it’s done. As you can see no cards change position at all, but when performed at speed, it appears as though they are mixed.

Now peel off the top two cards with your thumb as you begin to shuffle and keep them at the bottom of the deck while misdirecting the lads with a question like “can you remember your cards?”. Flip the bottom two cards upside down, so they are now face up. When you break the deck, surreptitiously pull off one card from the bottom, so that you are left with two half decks both with one chosen card face up on the bottom.

Now you give one half to a lad to hold. Cut your deck in half and when you fan the cards flip the other deck over so that the bottom card is now the top card. When you smooch the cards together you are only mixing face-up cards except for the chosen card. Now all the cards are face up except the chosen card. But the audience doesn’t know this, and that is the crucial deception. Do the same with the other deck. And mix both decks together, all the cards are face up except the two chosen cards, cut and turn the deck. Now go through the deck and reveal to the audience what you already know – all the cards are face down except for the two chosen cards. Asking someone to tap the deck implies that the magic happens at that moment, but we know it happened a long time ago. And there’s how to do a great card trick.

BMW Builds a Shape-Shifting Car Out of Cloth

Concept cars give automotive designers a chance to let their imaginations run wild, often with outlandish results. But even by that measure, BMW has come up with something as strange as it is innovative — a shape-shifting car covered with fabric.

Instead of steel, aluminum or even carbon fiber, the GINA Light Visionary Model has a body of seamless fabric stretched over a movable metal frame that allows the driver to change its shape at will. The car — which actually runs and drives — is a styling design headed straight for the BMW Museum in Munich and so it will never see production, but building a practical car wasn’t the point.

Chris Bangle, head of design for BMW, says GINA allowed his team to “challenge existing principles and conventional processes.”
